And a year before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I noted that just as Jimmy Carter looked strong a year out from the election of 1980, so too Donald Trump appeared to be on track for reelection in 2020. But — noting the way that the economy and a hostage crisis in Iran derailed Carter’s run for reelection — I observed that ​“external events play a very surprising and unpredictable role in how a president’s fortunes can change.”
